As we enjoying amazing fall weather without rain or frost and for many parts of Alberta it is almost 2 months without precipitation. It crucial to water trees in fall prior freezing. As drought continue cracks in soils appears that will allow cold and freezing air enter into root zone. This will cause tree mortality in spring. Watering now will close cracks and water will freeze around root zone
Also adding wood chips and water over wood chips would be ideal things to do.
