Public Works InformationThe M.D. of Smoky River's public works department consists of ten full-time employees and five part-time or seasonal employees. These individuals are responsible for the maintenance of 1002 kilometres of gravelled roads and 758 kilometres of other roads as well as the Smoky River Regional Airport located in Donnelly. Policy 122: Road Maintenance outlines the duties the municipality will undertake in terms of summer and winter road maintenance. This policy also outlines frequency of grading on roads and priorities for snow removal. As per Policy 100, the M.D. will supply an approach or culvert not exceeding eight metres in length on each quarter section in the municipality. Extensions can be obtained from the M.D. at the landowner’s expense. See the policy for more details. Requests may be called in or e-mailed to . Snowplowing of driveways will be provided only if a flag is displayed at the driveway entrance. Flags may be purchased for $25.00 at the Municipal Office during regular business hours. A hold harmless agreement must be entered into with the M.D. before this service will be provided (Form B). This form, once completed, can be faxed, e-mailed or brought in to the office. Policy 112 can provide more detailed information regarding snowplow flags for driveways. Gravelling of driveways will only be granted in the case of school bus turnarounds or construction work performed on the driveway. Policy 115 Road Bans Road bans are set and removed by the "Road Weight Committee". For the purpose of this municipality, the committee is represented by Council as a whole. Check the "What’s New" section for road ban information. Policy 114 Ditch Work Ditch cleaning on private property will be provided by the municipality in the event that such work will benefit two or more individual landowners. Form U is the agreement that must be signed before ditches are cleaned. If your culverts require steaming, please contact the public works department at 837-2623 or e-mail at . Any work to be performed in municipal road allowances by landowners must have prior approval from the municipality and a hold harmless agreement must be in place. Signs All signs requested by individuals must meet specific standards as outlined in Policy 121. All costs will be borne by the individual requesting it. Dust Control The M.D. no longer subsidizes the cost of dust control. Residents who require dust control are encouraged to contact the following supplier: Western Road Management (403) 720-2344 Landowners who have dust control applied must sign an agreement with the M.D. beforehand. Hauling on Municipal Roads Policy 120 was adopted to regulate commercial/industrial/contract hauling on M.D. roads. A Road Use Agreement (Form R) must be entered into with the municipality prior to such activity. There are two major projects to be undertaken in 2001:
Any new projects will be announced in the "What's New" section of this site. Boundary Roads There is a question of jurisdiction for those roads that run along the M.D. of Smoky River boundaries. The north and east boundaries belong to the neighbouring municipalities and the south and west boundaries belong to our municipality. Maps Municipal maps are available for sale at the Municipal Office at a price of $15.00 plus GST. Maps may be mailed to you at an additional cost to cover shipping charges.
